There was a moment in my business journey where I let fear stop me right in my tracks and almost made one of the worst decisions in my life.
I was trying to figure out how to juggle a full-time job, graduate school, and my coaching practice. So, I decided that my coaching business dream would have to wait until I was done with graduate school. It wasn’t practical to pursue my business full-time yet. In fact, it was a crazy idea considering I was nowhere near where I should have been to go full-time.
Logic had me convinced this was the right way to go, however, when I slowed down to check in with myself, my gut was screaming to face the fear, take the leap of faith, and step into what I truly wanted. So, I did the ‘crazy’ thing and chose to move through my fear, which led me to where I am today in doing what I love!
Can you relate to my previous predicament? Are you doing a disservice to yourself by playing it safe? Do you feel stuck about which direction to pursue? Are you choosing fear instead of yourself?
This video blog will give you an honest look at what I’ve learned about fear through working with my clients, and share a new perspective on how to move through your fear to achieve your biggest aspirations.
Reframe Fear: Fear is NOT a bad thing. You can move through fear, self-doubt and anything that is holding you back. What if you looked at fear as feedback that you’re stepping out of your comfort zone and growing? What if you saw fear and discomfort as a sign that you should pursue the exact source of your fear? How would that impact your life?
Create a 'Shoulds' vs. Wants List: Sometimes when you feel stuck, it’s because you’re facing internal conflict between what you truly want versus what you think you should pursue. In order to let go of your old fear-based conditioning, start by creating a ‘shoulds’ list with all the rules, expectations, and things you think you 'should' be doing. In a separate list, write down all the things that genuinely excite you and that you’re curious about. Compare the two lists. Which list feels more in alignment with who you truly are and what you want?
Understand Your Fear and Take Small Steps Towards It: The purpose of fear is to protect you so it’s important to understand what your fear is trying to protect you from. Perhaps it’s failure, rejection, uncertainty, etc. Where did this fear first show up in your life? Map it out and you'll see that it’s just a story and an old habitual pattern of thinking that thinks it’s keeping you safe. The best way to move through this is by taking small actions that put you in contact with exactly what you’re afraid of. Taking steps out of your comfort zone will help you overcome the fear and increase your threshold for growth.
As I tell my clients, when you feel the fear, bring it ON! If you settle for something that is safe and not in alignment with you, then what is that really going to do for your life? Instead, what would it do for you to move through the fear and pursue your dreams? Imagine the possibilities and what you can create!
